When I was in elementary school, one of my favorite K-pop artists was SHINee. And on that note, it's incredibly surprising that I never got the chance to watch the group's debut short drama "1-2-3-4." So when it came out on YouTube recently, I knew I'd have to watch! The story follows a girl who moves to Seoul with her mother and meets her friends at their high school - only for everything to change after she accidentally gets involved in a fight with another student. They get expelled from their school until they're able to get things worked out.
This is an emotional story. No, more than emotional. It's also dark, and has some pretty heavy topics to cover - like teen suicide and bullying - that are handled with sensitivity, even though the group is young in real life. The drama feels relatable, even though at times I was confused by the very ambiguous plot! It feels like it's trying to stick with one concept, but it veers off into many different directions. It's not clear if the group's characters are in high school or in middle school, for example. I also don't know if they're talking about real-life people.
I don't think the story is that bad, but there are some large issues that were handled much better elsewhere. They could've toned down the dark themes just a little bit - like the bullying and suicide - and also expanded on some of their characters' personalities more. They're all very similar, which can make it hard to keep focused on who everyone is! It all felt very rushed at times too.
Despite all this, I enjoyed this drama quite a bit! It has some great music, and the sets are also really pretty - especially when they do the individual individual performances. Plus, I'm really glad they kept all the dance routines! And of course, SM Entertainment knows how to cast good-looking people in their dramas.
I give "1-2-3-4" a 4 out of 5. It's not perfect by any means - especially in terms of its plot - but it's an enjoyable way to spend an hour or two.
